Not as bad as I thought. Most everybody had two cases of water in their cart. Toilet paper and paper towel aisle was picked clean. It was busy, but not chaotic, people were stocking up, and shelves were starting to thin out. Tomorrow will be a different story. I guess we timed it just right.

Sadly, the ramen was entirely sold out. Still plenty of fresh fruit and produce, though. We’ll eat that next week.

Are we facing a virus or natural disaster?
I got this text today from a friend of mine:
“In case they do some sort of Mandatory quarantine I suggested to my husband that we go get some canned foods and some other stuff and he goes as I pass by some yogurt that my manager suggest I try he says you need to stick to non-refrigerator stuff in case the power goes out”
The whole toilet paper thing is also foreign to me. Are people expecting to violently shite themselves? Is that a CV symptom?

It’s only a symptom in something like 4% of cases, but shortages have been a problem everywhere...
And yeah, I’m expecting the power and water to stay on, there’s really no reason to expect that breakdown of society level problem.

Real ly: water? If we get to the point where the taps don’t work, self-isolation will be the least of our worries.

Yeah I don’t get this one. If the taps stop , working we got bigger problems than coronavirus. Maybe it’s because it’s just a go to generic emergency supply to cache?

My wife and I probably overbought between the grocery store and Costco earlier in the week, but we tried hard to be thoughtful about it, getting larger packages of meat that could be broken down and frozen, planning meals, etc. We’re fortunate that we have two refrigerators and a freezer. Many don’t. Many of the people tonight were just going down the aisles grabbing whatever. As for the water, I think people just automatically think water is something they will need. I try not to fault them for it. There has been precious little guidance from our government on what we should be getting, and water is just sort of the go-to disaster product. I have some stored, but like you, I don’t expect the water to shut off, or the electricity.

My wife and I were talking today about stocking up on pantry and frozen items . The Food Lion by my gym had longer than usual checkout lines when I drove past it on my way to my workout. Maybe I’ll hit up the hippie market by my office tomorrow. Hopefully their bulk section hasn’t been ransacked yet.

You’re facing both. Grocery stores closing isn’t that extreme of a possibility.

Well, I’m a fan of soup. But we’ve planned our meals and don’t plan to be simply opening cans of soup.

I’m not so much worried about a quarantine as I am trying to limit how much I need to go out in the next few weeks. Sunday is our regular shopping day. If the entire city of Austin has not turned into zombies, we will likely go top off our regular weekly supplies of things and reserve the stuff we just bought. It will all keep. If this while thing blows over with a thud, then we don’t have to go to the grocery store for a couple of weeks.

There is still plenty of food out there, you just have to be a bit creative about it.

I had an intere sting experience a couple of weeks ago when news about panic buying first hit NZ. Innocently w ent to the supermarket the day after it’d been on the news to do our weekly shop, and found the queues out the door. S eriou s ly: t he y had a security guard restri cting it to one in one out like a night club on a Friday night - never seen anything like it . Thought “screw that, it can wait”.
A couple of hours later I was way out in the countryside, and driving through a small town I noticed the local supermark et didn’t look too busy, so thought I’d do my shop there. No signs at all that it wasn’t a regu lar day. I did the shop and on the way out asked the checkout chick if they’d had any one stocking up. She said “N ope: folks round here d on’t panic about anything till they see the whites of the Devil’s eyes”.
Country people - gotta love them.

Country people tend to be much more practical about things. City folk tend to think meal to meal, or latte to latte.

I just returned from a trip to town(I live 12 miles up the mountain from a small 1 horse town with 1 small Independent grocery store, a drug store , a dollar general, and like 3 bars). They were just restocking the paper products and bottled water that had been pretty low. Similar story at the DG. Our schools didn’t have school Monday to prepare for virtual school(take home packets for elementary and online school for middle\high) in case of an emergency. I expect they will be using them soon. I appreciate the preparation. I wonder what it will do for those families not set up like mine, where if I bring y kids to work they get to play at Gramma and Grandpa’s. With dogs.
Also not to bring religion into anything but my church’s worldwide leadership has suspended all congregation’s m eetings until further notice as well.
I battle so hard with myself. Part of me is prone to mock people and groups and “the man” for overreacting, while the other me understands the science presented by many in the lowering of the peak of outbreak by limiting group gatherings.

I’m absolutely with you. I’ve even gone back and forth over the need to stock up. The thing is, if I don’t, then there won’t be anything left when I go for my regular trip. I almost have to stock up.

My wife went out looking for groceries including to and hand sanitizer, we are not sticking up for the end of the world, but as stated, if we don’t buy some now it will apparently be all gone. Anyway no luck at Walmart, Target or HyVee. But the local mom and pop grocery (we still have a few) had plenty.
A little thin on the shelves but not at crisis level. I bought one twelve pack of double rolls (on sale!) and called it good.

I made sure Uber Eats and Amazon apps are still on my phone, so I’m kind of looking forward to some Q time. Oh and I bought 168 rolls of toilet paper. Can’t be too prepared you know.

I went grocery shopping today since I figured going on the weekend would be a bad idea. It was annoying how much stuff was missing. But more importantly the random things like Ramen being gone. The toilet paper and water aisles made me laugh but I don't need any of that. Then I went to costco and they were out of chickens and had no tuna cans. Pretty much the only reason I went there which was bothersome. I guess I got everything I needed but I don't like going out into public right now. Not that the general public is ever a good place to be lol.

We just got a 5 am phonecall, text, and email stating that there is no school next week. Spring break starts a week early.
The Oregon governor has issued the statement that all schools are to close until April 1st. Yay......

Costco was out of god damn beef! I was so pissed. But they had all the pork anyone could need. People make no fucking sense.
And everyone was just buying perishable shit. I lost count the people I saw who had enough bread to feed an army. If I cared I would have told them bread doesn’t last very long.
But the more people waste money on bread is less money they can spend on TP when it comes back in stock.

You say that last bit like people actually only spend money that they have rather than its all on credit anyways.
But yeah I ended up just buying chicken and ground beef from the frozen section because of that. I only went to Costco for a chicken, bagels, and a big pack of ground beef. But they had only a couple sacks of plain bagels, no chickens, and barely any fresh meat. Granted I went like right before closing though so maybe thats normal. No way in hell am I going near there on a weekend though.
At least the parking lot is finished now though.

That definitely was not normal. I’ve never seen it like that, even on a holiday weekend.
